Los Angeles, CA. Macy’s Passport is the highest profile component in Macy’s West’s year-round commitment to give back and partnership with the community, sponsors and vendors for an evening of fashion and compassion in the fight against HIV/AIDS. As of 2008, Macy’s Passport has raised over $27 million for organizations in San Francisco, Los Angeles and other communities. Although nine local groups were selected as beneficiaries, this is the first time the Wall Las Memorias Project was selected as a recipient.

“It is with deep appreciation and humility that we receive this award from the Macy’s Passport Fund,” Richard Zaldivar. “Macy’s commitment and record of giving back to the community to fight AIDS is unparalleled and makes a big difference in the lives of all of us here in Los Angeles. The Macy’s Passport Fund truly sets a high bar for philanthropic endeavors by private enterprise.”

The Macy’s Los Angeles Passport event was held last Thursday at the Barker Hanger in the Santa Monica Air Center. Several celebrity guests, superstar models and internationally acclaimed fashion designers were there as well as supporters and volunteers of the Wall Las Memorias Project. In keeping with a tradition established 25 years ago, Macy’s Passport showcased the best of designer and trend fall collections for men, women and children—all set to innovative music and lighting—and concluded with a live auction.

“The event was magical and it was exciting to be both guest and award recipient this year,” said Zaldivar. “I commend the organizers of the event for a job well done and look forward to putting the additional resources into action for vulnerable populations here in Los Angeles.”The Wall Las Memorias Project has had a busy fall schedule—with the Strike Out AIDS Night at Dodger Stadium earlier this month, last week’s Macy’s Passport event, the Latinos Faith, Culture and HIV Conference on October 10th, and 15th Annual Noche de las Memorias on December 1st.

###

The Wall Las Memorias Project has built support for its AIDS monument through innovative prevention programs, leadership training and grassroots community organizing. With strong community support for the project, local elected officials helped secure state and local public funding for the AIDS monument, making it the first publicly funded AIDS monument in the nation. The Wall Las Memorias Project continues to be at the forefront of the battle to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. The AIDS monument will bring awareness and remind us that the need for education remains vital to our community. For more information, go to www.TheWallLasMemorias.org/ or call (323) 257-1056.

What – "Personality Over Politics: Is the Media Creating 'Darlings' in Obama and Palin?"
On the eve of the first presidential debate, our panel examines whether the press is creating such an aura around Obama and Palin that hard issues are getting lost in the debate. Los Angeles, CA – For over half a century, the Coro Southern California Center for Civic Leadership has been “Training Tomorrow’s Leaders” through its venerated Fellows Program in Public Affairs. Twelve more future leaders began their Coro leadership experience earlier this month and all have just begun their government placements.

“We ask our Coro Fellows to examine all of the institutions of public affairs and that begins with their Government rotation,” said Coro Southern California President and CEO, Don Pierro. “Only by getting hands-on exposure can they begin to fully understand the relationship between citizens and their government.”

For the next five weeks, the Coro Fellows will be looking at the respective roles of government, working on projects and conducting interviews—to be followed with a presentation of their findings. Other rotations in the coming months will include political campaigns, business, labor, media and community organizations. Below is a list of where the Coro Southern California Fellows are placed.

· Carlos Mejia and Jacqueline Scahill – Los Angeles Department of Water and Power

· Jeanelle Obergfel and William White – Los Angeles County Chief Executive Office (William T. Fujioka)
