Latinas March to Increase Awareness and Register Voters for May 19th Special Election

Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and other electeds will join HOPE for its Sacramento Event

Los Angeles, CA. Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) kicks off the 15th Annual Latina Action Day Policy Conference today in Sacramento, with a march to the Secretary of State’s Office. The goal is to increase voter turn-out for the upcoming May 19th special election, with a particular emphasis on registering Latinas and informing their communities on its importance.

WHO: Assembly Speaker Karen Bass; Assembly Speaker pro Tem Lori Saldaña; Assembly Majority Leader Alberto Torrico; and Assemblymembers Norma Torres and Hector De La Torre.

WHAT: 15th Annual Latina Action Day – Over hundred Latina leaders Rally and March to the Secretary of State’s Office Building preparing for May 19th Special Election

WHERE: From: Sacramento Convention Center 1400 J Street, Sacramento, California; To: Secretary of State Building, 1500 11th Street, Sacramento, CA

WHEN: Latina Action Day is an interactive policy conference that brings together women from all regions of California to Sacramento to facilitate dialogue between Latina leaders and elected officials on public policy issues affecting all Californians.

· 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. – Rally and March to Secretary of State
· 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. – *Kick-off of HOPE’s HOPE ACT VOTE Campaign
· 2 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. – *Special Remarks by Assembly Speaker Karen Bass
· 2:45 p.m. – 4 p.m. – Town Hall: Proposition 11 Redistricting and Its impact on Latina Representation
· 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. – The State Budget Crisis and its Regional Implications discussion with Legislative Analyst Mac Taylor
· 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. – VIP Reception
· 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. – Celebrating Latina Leadership Dinner – speakers include Senator Gloria Romero, Assembly member Lori Saldaña and Assembly member John Pèrez (partial list)

WHY: HOPE is issuing a Call to Action to increase Latina voter engagement for the upcoming May 19th Statewide Special election. Latinas currently make up 17% of the population in alifornia, which translates to a potential voting bloc that advocates on behalf of the growing Latino community. Democracy is run by those who show up. HOPE encourages all Latinas to put democracy to work this year and vote.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) has been working to provide a critical voice to Latinas to develop their personal growth, prosperity, and political clout. HOPE has served the Latina community with innovative programming that provides leadership development, statewide networking opportunities, experiential learning, and one on one interaction with local, state, and federal officials and agencies. Over 20,000 Latinas have been trained through annual conferences; over 20% of the HOPE Leadership Institute participants have successfully run for elected office or been appointed; and 80% of the young Latinas trained have gone on to college.
